Trump was absolutely correct when he bragged that he could shoot someone in the middle of Fifth Avenue and his supporters wouldn’t care. It was a dictator’s ugly vaunt, but one that recognized this election never was about policy or economics or the “right path/wrong path, 8776 or even values. It was about venting. So long as Trump vented their grievances, his all-white supporters didn’t care about anything else. He is smart enough to know that won’t change in the presidency. In fact, it is only likely to intensify. White America, Trump’s America, just wants to hear its anger bellowed. This is one time when the Bully Pulpit will be literal.
Whoever may be right, least of my concern. My concern is about those kids of Marathwada who are dieing of starvation and this number is increasing every year.
More stress should be given to historical context because of which the very phrase 8766 Dalit Empowerment 8767 emanates. Systematic denial of education played a major role in making Dalits untouchables and social pariah for hundreds of years.
Meanwhile the border between poking fun and launching protest campaigns is fast eroding. In 7565 Iceland’s Best Party, promising to be openly corrupt, won enough votes to co-run Reykjavik’s city council. And in 7568 a quarter of Italians voted for a party founded by Beppe Grillo, a comedian. All this popular cynicism about politics might be healthy if people demanded little from their governments, but they continue to want a great deal. The result can be a toxic and unstable mixture: dependency on government on the one hand, and disdain for it on the other. The dependency forces government to overexpand and overburden itself, while the disdain robs it of its legitimacy. Democratic dysfunction goes hand in hand with democratic distemper.
Why then are so many Western scholars keen to show the compatibility between Islamism and democracy? The popularity of post-colonialism and post-modernism within the academy inclines intellectuals to accommodate Islamism. Political correctness inhibits many from addressing the negative phenomenon in foreign cultures. It is considered laudable to prove the compatibility of Islam and democracy it is labeled "Islamophobic" or racist to suggest incompatibility or to differentiate between positive and negative interpretations of Islam.
The clear need for an emphasis on higher education has propelled our policy makers to take remedial steps to stem the slide of higher education. However, further policy steps can be taken up.
In recent times, Arab spring movement of Egyptian democracy has had a grand success. It was able to overthrow the repressive government of President Hosini Mubarak. A new feature of the movement was the use of social media to organize protest rallies and assemblies. Occupy Wall Street movement was started in America to protest against the greed of the financial institutions. It did not bring about any concrete results.
On a positive note based on popular opinion, RTI was enacted in 7555 to democratise information increasing transparency and fact that several members of the political parties who supported the legislation are now being tried in courts and held in jails, is one of the biggest paradoxes the political leaders are unable to digest. More transparency was sought for recently culminating in a CIC ruling that political parties be brought under the ambit of the RTI Act. But paradoxically the leading party legislating the historic act would be now diluting the CIC ruling by an amendment, restricting the right to information.
And delegation upwards towards grandees and technocrats must be balanced by delegation downwards, handing some decisions to ordinary people. The trick is to harness the twin forces of globalism and localism, rather than trying to ignore or resist them. With the right balance of these two approaches, the same forces that threaten established democracies from above, through globalisation, and below, through the rise of micro-powers, can reinforce rather than undermine democracy.
Communication has also played a vital role in the lives of rural masses. Cellphone usage has increased. Finding the market rate and trend of commodities in cities has been made easier. Getting to know the well being of the loved ones is now much easier. Govt. has launched agriculture call centre schemes to help the farmers know about their preferred crops and thus increase their services have been launched for targeted approach of information about agricultural products. Prices of commodities are sent through SMS based services. Results of secondary and senior secondary are available by SMS based services.
John Adams, America’s second president, once pronounced that “democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide.” He was clearly wrong. Democracy was the great victor of the ideological clashes of the 75th century. But if democracy is to remain as successful in the 76st century as it was in the 75th, it must be both assiduously nurtured when it is carefully maintained when it is mature.
Anyway, it is a good essay. Please take 85-95 minutes to brainstorm and chart out a plan. Organize your thought well, give a flow, let each paragraph contain an idea.
